Village Newsletter: April 2022

Written by: Michael Knights
Published: 2022-04-01

Since the end of February and the lifting of legal restrictions we have returned to normal meetings.

Many thanks to everyone who collected little blue tokens at Tesco and voted at Diss, Aldeburgh and Saxmundham branches for our project. We have just been advised that we came second in the vote and will receive £1,000. The grant will be spent on wildlife improvements at the HQ site. Thank you all.

Closure of the crisp packet recycling scheme
First of all, the Fressingfield Scout Group would like to thank everyone for their support in our recycling and fundraising initiative. Thanks to you, we have been able to send quite literally one tonne of empty crisp packets for recycling and this has raised £575 for the Scout Group to date. This is an amazing achievement, which we as a community, can be very proud of.
Terracyle how now decided to close the scheme, in light of the widespread availability of collection points outside of their scheme. Please take a moment to find where you can drop off your empty packets going forward and continue with the recycling effort.
That said, the scheme remains open for another month or so and Terracycle will give us an extra bonus donation based on what we have collected, so now is the time for a final push. Please make sure you bring your packets to your usual collection point by Sunday 10 April.

Pioneer Troop Scouts set up some screening in the hall and had an evening with Nerf Guns. There was so much running around that a break for a drink was needed! A couple of weeks later, as part of their Gold Award, the Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders planned and ran a session on map skills, this was supervised by our Young Leader. They all made a fantastic job of the evening and the other members learned a lot.

Unfortunately, storm Eunice meant that a couple of sessions were cancelled and the Explorers swimming session at Yoxford had to be postponed for a few weeks. A couple of weeks previously the Explorers and Scouts had been to Norwich Ski Slope for a very enjoyable evening of tubing.

Over the break some of the Leader team and Explorers got together to update First Aid training and renew qualifications. Prior to Covid we would have made a full weekend of it somewhere away and mixed in some other development and teamwork activities but we just stayed local and did it in one day this year. That was a big improvement on last year when we could only meet virtually.

On Shrove Tuesday Pioneer Troop ran a Pop up Pancake Café. The Cubs came and ran some side stalls with games to keep the customers entertained while teams of Pioneer Scouts cooked, made drinks, served and washed up and a couple of Explorers organised the carpark. It was a great evening with happy customers and a fantastic team spirit. Thank you to everyone that came and helped raise £155 towards the HQ project.

We have recently been allocated places on the Norfolk County Water Activities Weekend which will form part of Norfolk Scouts Jubilee celebrations in early June. As a Group we have not been on the Water Weekend for several years and our members are looking forward to the experience. The Scout Group is involved in our own celebration of the Jubilee and some local village activities over the weekend. More details soon.
