Scouting is slowly returning to normality though, as at the time of writing, residentials, camping and travelling as a group in a minibus are still prohibited; the rules for schools are much more relaxed.

To comply with the restrictions, it is much easier to remain outside so all our activities for this term are outdoors. For the first half term we have been having activities where we can all get used to each other again, air rifle shooting, crafting, knife skills, fire lighting and games and challenges. All of which have to be socially distanced -which can be tricky. The Scouts did spend a very windy evening spread out along the bank crabbing at Walberswick, in excess of 200 crabs were caught in a two hour period. The sizes ranged from as big as an adult hand to the size of a finger nail, everyone had a good time and apart from some Leaders’ feet, (after retrieving a dropped line), no one got wet!

Normally in early May we have a Group Camp for the whole Scout Group. Last year this had to be completely virtual and online and was very different but hugely successful. This year we waited until late May in the hope that the restrictions would be eased a bit and we were able to have a blended camp where Friday evening and Sunday were online but the Saturday was mainly actual activities.

The weather changed for the better and three Leader teams ran three bases in different locations. The young people attended which ever they wanted in whatever order suited them for two hour sessions. This turned out to be an excellent way to run the camp and everyone had a fantastic time. Activities included firewood preparation (use of axe and saw), firelighting, backwoods cooking, camp ovens, map reading exercise, assault course, air rifle and air pistol shooting, archery, frisbee golf, tracking, nature walk, relay games, wide games and camp fires. Here are a couple of pictures from the day taken at our new HQ site in Fressingfield, the camp video is available on this link :-

We continue to progress with the New Headquarters project and we hope to have the modular building on site by the end of the summer.
